Me vs. 65 Mustang

Sometime this week I am going to head up to the nearest 1/8th mile track and race my friend's really nice 65 fastback. I think he's going to edge me out but I was wondering what you guys think my chances are.

He has with a blown 5.0 that put 368 to the ground and runs somewhere between 8.1-8.5

I've got a 355 LT1 with GTP stage 2 heads, Combination Mororsports TS-224XL cam, SLP coated shorties, 3" Dynomax catback, and A4 with 2800 stall. My compression ratio is 9.2 which is going to help with the D1-SC I'm putting on it next summer, but doesn't do much for me now.

What do ya think?

Re: Me vs. 65 Mustang

Yeah, I agree. That sounds like the makings for a sweet race. You have a decent shot of clicking off a win in my book though.

Re: Me vs. 65 Mustang

As long as he is not starving the engine of air and has a nice aftermarket cai intake and a 52MM TB. I would say he should be around 410 - 425 Horse.

^^ So I'm not the only one who thinks that a blown 5.0 should be making much more than 368hp

Just cause you have a supercharger or a turbo doesn't mean you are making 5 times the amount of horsepower. Infact, that must be a pretty aggressive charger to be making that much power. a small charger like 4.5 - 6PSI will only make like 30 - 35 % more power. So on a 225 Horse car, thats 67.5 horse roughly. Now add that to the 225 and we have 292.5 flywheel horse, lets now add in for 25% drivetrain loss and thats roughly 222.5 horse at the wheels peak. So that is by no means weak for a charged 5.0.

Re: Me vs. 65 Mustang

I'm not exactly sure on the specs of his engine. All I know is that he has aluminum heads, and about 8psi.

My throttle body is the stock 48 mm but the plenum opening is ported to 58mm. I'm seriously thinking about that TB from Matt off of ebay. My intake probably isn't the best but I'm not really sure if a 4th gen LT1 CAI intake would work on my thirdgen??? Anyone know?

I will deffinatley have video of his car and mine going at it. Should be fun.

Yeah, you're starvng your engine and probably making like 370 - 390 instead of what you should be making. I strongly suggest getting yourself a intake and 52MM TB.

Edit- Also your Intake being ported to 58 is doing absolutely nothing for you if the ports letting in the air are still only limited to 48MM. To take a advantage of a 58MM ported intake you would need a 58 MM tb.

Re: Me vs. 65 Mustang

That does make sense. Do you think that a 52mm TB would be better matched to my setup than a 58mm? Also is there any advantage to buying an LT4 intake over my stock bored out intake? Thanks for the help.

EDIT- I just remembered the LT4 intake probably won't fit LT1 heads without machine work, right?

A 52MM will probably be your best bet unless your going with a ported stock one in which case get a 54MM. Also I bet your ported stock one flows better than the LT4, besides if you switch a LT4 intake. You need to switch to LT4 heads.

Re: Me vs. 65 Mustang

Well, thanks to Ernesto it looks like the race isn't going to happen this week. Hopefully next week all the weather will be out of the way and we can make it up to the track.
