Kaboom

When the timing chain goes, what are all the things that can happen? What will happen inside the engine? Some say it'll blow up, others say it will merely turn off. The scenario is when the chain breaks after countless miles of knocking against the valve cover because of a faulty chain guide...

Re: Kaboom

kaboom is right....valve damage most likely, and a whole lot of other stuff i dont know about. think of it this way; if you drop a glass cup on the floor, it may not break, but theres a damn good chance it will.

If I don't take my foot off the pedal soon enough, I'll blow the engine right? How does that work? What does the timing chain do?

Re: Kaboom

if my understanding is correct, the crankshaft moves the chain, the chain moves the camshafts, and the camshafts controll the valves. thats where it gets the name "timing" chain, since part of its job is to keep the engine parts synchronized. if the chain were to snap, then you would still have a moving crankshaft and moving camshafts except they wouldnt be connected, so they wouldnt be synchronized, and thats where the problems come into play.

Re: Kaboom

If the timing belt breaks on a non-obstruction engine then it simply turns off and doesn't start until the belt is replaced. If the timing belt breaks on an obstruction engine, the valves hit the pistons and the engine goes in the garbage. Now I would assume that it's the same principle with a timing chain, only thing is that you got that metal chain flying around which can't be all that good.

Re: Kaboom

I'm going away to college. I may have to drive this thing with me if I don't buy a new car. Since I have no time to do this myself, I got a frickin high quote from a garage to do it. I'm screwed.

Re: Kaboom

Still, getting it fixed for a thousand is better than buying a new car I don't want. I think i'm gonna do that.

I have heard it did, actually from some people on this forum. Also that it should be changed at 60k miles, which I can't believe. Why have to change a major part of the engine at a 3rd of it's lifespan??

Re: Kaboom

Okay so what does bad timing do to performance? The chain is making a lot of noise recently.

Re: Kaboom

You don't need to change the chain, all you gotta do is take out 2 tensioners, there's a really good write-up here....
