Caution!! The Bug is Loose!

I have been looking into many various performance upgrades for my vr4. I already have some upgrades, but I have been bitten by the bug. The "speed" bug that is. This is a very dangerous and complex creature. It only stalks on fast car owners that feels for the need for speed and can't get enough. It cleans out your bank account, by giving you the sense of you are doing the right thing for your health, well being, and you cars life. The only cure for this illness is to......... Well there is no cure, because you always want to go faster. So the only thing you can do to avoid the "speed" bug is to buy a Honda Civic with a giant park bench wing, blue rims, a huge dragon decal and guages out the wazuu.

Excuse me for my rambling. Im bored and I was thinking about stupid stuff, so I thought of posting something. I have a couple of questions though. I was looking into the Split Second MAF upgrade. Does it give you a substantual HP gain? Also what about Street Cams, and Water Injection. I need to make my car faster or I am going to go crazy.

Re: Caution!! The Bug is Loose!

^lol. Answer is...WTF is a 'Split Second MAF'???

But cams and injection only serve a purpose if your running bigger turbos...what kind of boost are you running mitsu?

EDIT: sorry...stupid reply. 3:45 in the morning after sneaking beer into 'Beerfest', then hitting the bars...

Re: Caution!! The Bug is Loose!

Any type of injection will basically allow you to run more boost without knock. Now there is water/alky/propane, etc, all with their own pros/cons. With 15Gs (I'm guessing you run on pump gas) this maybe a good mod to squeeze out a bit more power.

Cams could be good too, I personally would like to see the cam options for our cars further along in the 'tried and true' tested area. Few have run them long term. That said, there are people running htem, and there are some that have run them for plenty long. So don't interpret that as me saying they aren't reliable or whatever. I'm sure they are, I'm sure they are great. I just know less about the options. If you go that route, street cams not race cams would probably suit you best.

The SS MAF, could you provide a link, I'm not at all familiar with this MAF. And there are multiple things to consider when swapping MAFs, not knowing a thing about it, I'd personally go with a different one...but the gains on a MAF alone wont be great.

You mind putting up a full mod list. I mean like everything. It is alot easier to advise people when we know what exactly you have and havn't done.

Re: Caution!! The Bug is Loose!

I've never been a fan of short shifters on our cars. There are a couple out there, there is even a $3 DIY one, although I personally would stay away from it. I think the throw on our cars is right where it should be. If you want, I can do a search adn send you some links and you can do the research adn make up your own mind.

Anyway at the point you are at right now, I'd be looking at a better than stock clutch next. I would be surprised if you aren't already noticing the shortcomings of the stock one at those power levels. Also I didn't see a downpipe listed...are you still running the stock one? If so upgrade that now, that is a HUGE restriction in your exhaust flow.

After the clutch and dp, I'd look at some sort of intercooler upgrade, whether you went with larger sidemounts or a front mount is up to you. After that, water/alcohol/propane injection would allow you to run a bit more boost on pump gas.

Also if you havn't hotwired your fuel pump, I'd do that asap as well. No need to take any risks at this point. Plus with the aftermarket fpr you can handle a hotwired supra pump.

Re: Caution!! The Bug is Loose!

Everything you just said I need, I already done or have. The only things I need is the dp, and Alcohol injection. I was thinking of going with dsm sidemounts, also I heard Alamo (somthing like that) Motorsports has some large sidemounts that works very well with our cars. Also should I upgrade my intercooler piping to hard piping, because I would like to keep my stock piping; so I could still have a sleeper look. Or if I can find some black piping that would be great.

Also what do you think about the Dynamic Racing staged heads. I was thinking about sending my stock heads to get ported and polished, but the DR ones come with upgraded valves and lifters. People say that they give you a big horsepower gain, but I don't know if it gives you enough horsepower for the price.

I was also looking into a Spark Amplifier. I heard the MSD DIS 4 was good and the HKS Twin Power. DR sells a amp call Kenne Bell Boost a Spark. The only one I have dealt with in the past was MSD, but I was looking for something different.

Obviously not if you are still talking about a) downpipe b) intercooler(s) c) alcky injection, and you still havn't mentioned any clutch upgrade OR hotwired fuel pump. Don't say "everything I said you have or have already done" when, 3 outta 5 you don't have and the other 2 you are still not mentioning. You wanna waste you money, feel free, you want our advice, listen.

Get a hard pipe kit and paint it black. Stock piping is smaller, old/half rubber, and more prone to leaks.

I think DR is great, and I think their heads are great. I don't have them but to plan to get them in the future. Yes they are expensive, but I think they would be worth it. However as I said in my last 2 posts, there are things you should get before going for heads.

I don't know too much about either, but judging simply by what I see other people using, I believe the KBB is more popular.

Re: Caution!! The Bug is Loose!

I didn't mean any dis respect with my last post. I already hot wired my pump, and I have an Exedy six puck clutch. I didn't upgrade my intercoolers yet, because I was debating on doing a fmic or dsm side mounts. The dp croosed my mind, but someone told me I would be fine with just gutted pre cats. I don't really understand Alcohol injection, so I didn't do that yet, and I thought that I didn't really need it

Re: Caution!! The Bug is Loose!

Sorry didn't mean to get irritated at you, working on my car is putting me in a bad mood.

You don't really need alky or any other kind of injection for that matter, it is only a bonus for running slightly more boost on pump gas, if you keep your boost reasonable or go with race gas, there is no need.

Good to know you already have hotwired the pump and have a clutch. But I seriously recommend the downpipe. If you look at the stock one, it isn't in the shape of a 'Y', but more of an 'F'. This design causes really bad flow and turbulence because the merging of the 2 flows. Gutting the precats is great, it removes 1 huge restriction, but the stock downpipe is still another. I recommend any and everybody interesting in modding their cars, that they get a better downpipe as one of their first mods. So yeah, downpipe + gutted precats = awesome flow.
