2002 Envoy fan clutch

what are the symtoms of a bad fan clutch? My envoy sounds like the engine is working to hard when driving normal speeds....

do you need to reprogram the computer after the fan clutch is replaced????

The updated clutch pn#15293048 requires update, there are usually a bunch available for the 2002 if they haven't been done yet anyway.

The pcm may not recognize the updated parameters of the new clutch and operate erratically.

OK, I'm having the same problem with my 2002 Envoy. I had a mechanic check the codes and give me an estimate. It was ~$550. He recommended getting a second opinion, but I don't know anyone to take it to other than the dealer.

My question is this: Can a layman who is handy with tools replace this part? I'm willing to buy a Chilton and try it myself, but not sure if this job is too much to take on.

I've replaced a water pump in my 1995 Chevy Silverado, rebuilt carb in 4 wheeler, and other minor repairs, like starters, alternators, plugs and wires.

Welcome to af. This is a complex truck to do your own repairs in respect to any pcm/bcm related components. I would recommend a factory shop manual or a subscription to alldata.com for tech info. The replacement of the clutch, as I said above, requires updated programming, you could replace it and see what happens, but my sources say it needs to be done. Chilton is a waste of money on this truck.

Thanks for the quick reply. I'm checking out alldata.com, and their description is a little vague. Is that like a shop manual you download and have forever, or do you have to buy a subscription every year?

As for the programming, is that something I can do, or do I have to take it to a dealer/shop?

P.S. I ordered the part from autozone and will be trying this today.

I replaced this last week, and everything went ok. I bought the part from
Autozone for ~250 with lifetime warranty. This job only takes ~2.5 hours if you get the special tool for removal. It is a must. Autozone had it and I did their loan program and the job was a snap. I didn't reprogram my PCM and everything runs great. I just drove it 1100 miles to Vegas and back with no problem.
