Hi, I am looking to buy an 86 240 from someone I know for 400 dollars, which sounds like a pretty good deal because its in pretty good shape and only has 210k miles on it. I've heard these things run forever, upwards of 400k miles. Problem is, it starts up but then dies when you shift out of park into drive. I wanted to know what the problem might be before I actually buy the car in case its something super expensive. I heard it could be just a fuel pump or fuel pump relay though, in which case wouldnt cost that much to fix. Any input on this problem would be great. Thank you.

Re: Stalls when shifting out of park
Does it die like "electrically" when you shift to drive? Or does it sputter somewhat first? How about shifting into reverse? Or neutral?... What happens then? If it just "dies" then perhaps it's the neutral safety switch on the transmission.

Re: Stalls when shifting out of park
Ok, well, sorry I didn't answer sooner then. So what finally happened?
See, it's not just answering the current questions that's important, but getting the final solution. Somebody can search the posts for answers years from now and find the post, and get the answer without having to ask the question. So did you ever fix this car? |
