96 windstar (front brakes)
get springing noise when I appy the brakes, but not all the time . Performed
a front change of pads and rotors. Applied extra layer of anti-squeul goop to the back of the pads. Performed a test drive and still the same springing noise when I apply the brakes. Question: the pins on top of the pads are they necessary or they provide some type heat dissepation from the pads. the van has approximately 200 miles on the pads any answers will be greatly appriciated.

Re: 96 windstar (front brakes)
OK....first thing.....if you click on the link in my signature.....it will take you to pictures of various projects on my '96 3.8L.....which is now just over 170K miles.
I have step by step pictures for the front brakes. I did not use any antisqueal goo to my pads as the dealership that did the brakes before this job over did the goo....and it got onto the pad linings and rotor surfaces.....which certainly does not help in stoping the vehicle. I bought the slotted rotors to try to improve the braking....as it was not good.....and it is way....way better....but most of the improvement is that there is no goo on the frictional surfaces. I figured that I could add the goo if needed.....and did not have any squeal. HOWEVER.....I did get a grinding noise now and then.....and found that it was caused my my having (unknowingly....but I know that I did) bumped the metal shield that covers the bottom, inside rotor surface.... This was just barely touching the edge of the rotor....and made a nasty sound. A simple, gentle bend back out took care of the problem. I posted all the parts that I used.....and I am guessing that by pins, you mean the anti-rattle clips?....which.....the name tells it all.....are to keep the pads from rattling as you drive down the road.

I have have those anti-rattle clips under my caliper cover. It's the spring clips on top of the pads. I believe its too long or not needed in this vehicle. I've pushed them down with a lot of pressure, but still have that ocassional spriniging noise when I apply the brakes. I push the splash away another inch that did'nt relieve the situation. Rotorman
