$1800 TSI... what I bought

Man, my friend sold me his 1991 Talon(black)...TSI of course (FWD unfortunately)

I think I got a really good deal, it needed a clutch, but that's no biggie

It has:
boost gauge
oil pressure gauge
a/f gauge
turbo timer
walbro 255lph fuel pump
MBC (set at 16.5, spikes at 17)
nitrous system (purge only)
front mount intercooler (don't know size, but looks mid-size)
Mozart (don't know spelling) muffler
stock BOV
450's (stock I think)
stock turbo (soon to be replaced with 16-18 or 20G)
slightly cracked manifold (very small leak)

for another $850, I'm getting:
Zoom Stage II clutch
2.5" exhaust
17" eagle alloys (don't member model)(gunmetal) wrapped in Raptor super sticky tires

Re: $1800 TSI... what I bought

sry, I don't get to take possession of the car until Monday (til the clutch is fixed)... the exhaust will either be put on Monday night or Tuesday night (after hours)...

Now I just gotta figure out what BOV to get... (I don't like the crushed 1g, doesn't sound loud enough)...

Re: $1800 TSI... what I bought

I'm actually looking on e-bay... want an aftermarket tubular... but I think I'm gonna wait awhile... I've already spent $3k on the car (with all the parts I'm ordering)... I'll have a more updated list within the next week or two...

Anyone know how that HKS ssqv bov sounds/works?
are the e-bay equivalent bov's as good as the original, or should I shell out the extra money to buy namebrand...???

Re: $1800 TSI... what I bought

The HKS SSQV is the most amazing bov I've ever heard. The sound varies with how quickly you let off the throttle. My friend has it and I may eventually switch over to it as well. Right now I have a TurboXS RFL that I got to run for a little bit before my motor cw'd and it was soooo damn loud but everybody says they are known for boost leaks. For the time I got to test mine out it didn't have any kind of a boost leaking problems...

The ebay brand bov's are said to be cheap knockoffs but people also say that about the tubular headers. I know a few people that run those headers and experience no problems with them as people accuse them to have. I don't know anybody thats actually tried the bov's before though... That one could fall either direction I think...

Re: $1800 TSI... what I bought

Well compared to $250... the $50 don't seem too bad... I think I may try it and get back to you...
It'll be a week or two though, I wanna get the car on the road (I sold my dd and projects)... then I'll start with the toys...

Re: $1800 TSI... what I bought

You can't just vent unless you account for the lost air or you'll run like crap. Get a GM MAF/MAFT if you just want to hear the bov. I'd stay away from the ebay bovs because I do believe they are plastic and prone to leaking.

Your car won't run like crap, it will still run and you probably won't hardly notice, but over time it's not good on your engine.

But will cause overall richness and weird air metering, correct? Personally not having done this, I'm no expert, but I've heard others' experiences.

Re: $1800 TSI... what I bought

I vented mine atmosphere without the maft before my motor cw'd and I had no problems with it running oddly. It ran just as normal as could be... Of course the proper way would be to include the maft which I will be doing in my new setup, but I had no problems without it.

Re: $1800 TSI... what I bought

yeah, I know a/b the MAF conversion... I would place the BOV in front of the MAF right? that way all the air vented is before being accounted for...

The Talon is running rich right now, but it seems to be running a lot more rich at idle, prolly because of the walbro 255... I need an fpr... but I gotta get it on the road first... so it'll be a few weeks/paychecks before the car's straight...

I have heard that some of those BOV's are plastic... I will look over a few ads and see how it is all worded... I'll prolly just buy an authentic HKS...
I'm also looking to get an EGT, pillar pod, and possibly a wideband O2...
We'll see...

Re: $1800 TSI... what I bought

I'm assuming that venting must be rediculously loud but... I have an open air filter and the dump tube haced. Stock bov and it's still really loud I think from inside the car with the top down.

1g bov is going on as soon as my flange gets here.
