WIP: Tamiya 1/20 Jordan 191

I started the Jordan 191 shortly after the Ferrari 312T3; however, for the last 2 or 3 months I have been unable to work on it due to other commitments. I thought I would break with tradition and model Michael's first GP at Spa... like no one else has thought of that! :-)

Rather than waiting until its much further completed, I have decided to take a few photos and share with the forum the progress that I have made.

The two most interesting points are:

1) It took some trial and error but I eventually found what I consider to be the correct blue and green colours for this car. I have the Formula Perfect book and this shows many different shades of green. I worked on the premise, that as 7up were sponsors, it should be 7up green. For this I used Halford's Ford Modena Green Spray Paint. The blue is Tamiya's TS-44 Brilliant Blue. This was applied in 3 light coats over 2 coats of white primer and a single coat of gloss white (in much the same technique as described by SeanyG on his excellent Ferrari 310B thread).

2) I am using the Studio 27 decals. The instructions with the decals and in the Formula Perfect book get the nose cone decals wrong. If you look at the photos of the event, you will see that they are different. Apologies for pointing that out to those who haven't noticed this. I think the only reason I noticed it was because my mouse mat is a photo of this particular car.

I'm still working on the CF for the front wing and the CF tray that sits on top of the engine still needs work where the trumpets protrude; however, so far I am happy with the progress.

All the best,
BillyPee

Looks great so far! May I ask how you managed to paint the Ford F1 cam covers? Having a heck of a time on my Mclaren...

Re: WIP: Tamiya 1/20 Jordan 191

In my eye, the Jordan 191 is the last good looking F1 car.

Can wait to see more. However, I'm "dismayed" to see that all the builds on this site seem to be above what I can possibly achieve, this one obviously included. I feel inadequate somehow... I need to get to a bench and soon!

You guys are a great inspiration!

Looking superb! Colour selection can be a pain in the neck sometimes, but it looks like you're very close to the mark - well done.

Can you tell me exactly how you hold the parts on those pieces of wire - I always have a problem with properly securing parts for painting, and it looks like you've got a good system going.

Hi sadler21. The technique I use is to put a piece of Bare Metal Foil over any area I want to eventually be chrome/aluminium/silver, etc. The BMF can be oversized slightly, you don't need to be too precise. Once attached, just cover with whatever paint you need to use; in my case the cam covers are covered in X-18 semi-gloss black. Let it dry, and then lightly rub off the X-18 to reveal the BMF below... it works like a charm! If you use a sanding stick, use the smoothest one that gets the job done!

Hi Captain Mark. I use a pin vise to drill a hole in the part where no one will see it. I use either 0.4 mm or 0.8 mm copper wire depending on the size of the part I want to hold. My preference is always to try and get some 0.8 mm wire attached as it doesn't bend and is much easier to handle. Drill into the piece as far as you dare!... maybe 0.5 mm is enough. Place a little CA glue on the end of the wire and push it home. The advantage with this technique is twofold: 1) You get to chose the mount point (rather than perhaps multiple mount points off the sprue; and, 2) the area attached is significantly reduced. To remove, most come out with a tug, or if you bend a 90 degree angle in the wire, you can wind it up and eventually it will come loose. On very delicate parts, you can just cut the wire off and sand it down.

P.S. On the colour front, the last shot of the blue parts is not representative of the blue at all. It is over-exposed and washed out. Take a look at the shot above of the body for a much truer reflection of the colours.

Hi Big Pat. As a word of encouragement, I haven't been doing this very long. Also, you are on the right forum for enjoying a steep learning curve. I don't put myself in the big league modeller on here because I am anything but! Just, read, experiment and stay inquisitive.

Thanks Robrex, Guiddy and KevHw for your supportive comments.

All the best, BillyPee

Nice start Billy, this is one of the all time beautiful cars. I like how you are painting the blue sections, i think an easier alternative to trying to get those decals down.

Well, the main reason I am painting the blue sections is that I am using the Studio 27 decals and they dont have blue sections . Seriously, though, you are probably right. It does take a lot of patience doing two tone body work and I have learnt the hard way on other models about getting a tight fit on the masking work. At the moment, there is a definite step between the colours but I haven't started the sanding and clear coats yet. I am hoping to get the transition smooth this time (which will be a first for me).

Thanks for the feedback
BillyPee

I agree with you Shunter, it is certainly up there. I think I read that it is the first car to feature an anhedral nose. Certainly the nose/front-wing are stunning forms (although I think the Tyrrell 020 is even better executed). However, taken as a whole, the cars of that year had far too many rear wing elements to be aestetically pleasing, and the colour scheme did this car no favours... the pre-season test car looks stunning. My only regret is that even though I was watching F1 in 1991 I can't recall the car now I look back.

Re: WIP: Tamiya 1/20 Jordan 191

Billypee, I missed this build upto now, I really love this car and have it in the to do pile also. Engine looks great too, impressed with your C/F work around the trumpets. Great start mate, look forward to seeing this progress.

Be interested to see how the body finishes too once you have it finished, I too always have trouble with joins between sprayed colours, I remember when I first tried the old Benetton B188, I failed miserably to do a neat job. Yours look really nice so far and should look even better once you have the clear on.

Keep it up mate, Im not able to spend any time on modeling at the mo and the 310B is on hold, very frustrating but seeing the excellent builds on here always keeps me interested.

Sean

Hi SeanyG. I know how you feel about getting modelling time. The work that has been keeping me out of modelling finished last Thursday, so now I will have evenings and weekends to myself again :-)

Re: WIP: Tamiya 1/20 Jordan 191

I only noticed your thread just recently. You have made an excellent start the colours are looking spot on.Seeing your build up and then the real car in person inspired me enough to obtain the kit myself (as well as those excellent S27 decals) I not going to build it yet as I have still to finish my S27 Williams FW16 (having a bad time on this one trying to get it all in line suspension wise etc) but it's getting there.I will be keeping an eye on your build up to glean some tips for when I get round to building mine.Keep up the good work. Here's a couple of pics of the real one I took recently.

Re: WIP: Tamiya 1/20 Jordan 191

Hi Steve,

Thanks for the kind words of encouragement and the wonderful photos you took. Where abouts is this on display? I guess that's you reflected in the last photo :-) When you do make a start on the model, try and get hold of the Formula Perfect Manual as it has lots of detailled photos.

I'm working on the air filter at the moment which I am making from "Fab Foam" and I'm really quite excited about the realism that it will add.

Kind regards,
Bill
