dipstick prob..?

i have a 91 s10 2.5L w/ 225km
recently i was driving down a hill when i slammed on the brakes. shortly after that my motor was ticking. i drove about 150 km's, before the ticking became very loud. i noticed the motor didnt have much power at that point and the service engine soon light came on. i checked the oil and it didnt show a drop on the dipstick. i made it home and it turns out i blew a valve cover gasket. i replaced that and as i was doin so, i broke the dipstick off somehow. i drove for a while with no dipstick and occasionally fillin up with oil. i ordered from the dealer a dipstick but the part STILL hasnt came in. the dipstick broke off flush with the block so i plugged it with an earplug. seems to work good. no more leakage.
A few questions though:
- Do you believe my motor was harmed after running it nearly 200km with no oil showing on the dipstick?
- how important is it to have the correct amount of oil in the motor?
- what would you suggest i do. possibly get an oil change, and plug it temporarily with the earplug? untill the part comes in?
