Unhappy '86 Chevy Van - how to get the engine dome open??

ok, i'm a bit embarrassed about this one...

i just purchased an 86 Chevy G10 cargo van, and i'm having trouble getting the dome between the front seats that covers the engine opened..

i took off the console/glovebox, and undid the two latches.. do i also need to unbolt the hinges at the base of the dome? i kinda assumed that since they are hinges, the wouldn't have to come off to swing the dome open...

i give it a good strong pull, but the dome barely budges.. there is a duct that is above the dome, that is kinda in the way, but it seems like it would be really horrible planning to require removing this duct just to be able to see the engine...

yeah, so i feel like a fool
any experience with this would be greatly appreciated!

if it's anything like the Astros, there should be 2 bolts under the hood , attached to the firewall, that have to be released, easily done with the lug nut removal tool from the jack compartment, or a big, long regular screwdriver.
