shaved antenna

have any of you guys gotten away with just fiberglassing the hole, or is does it absolutely have to be welded?

Re: shaved antenna

outside. all you have to do is put some of that hard mesh backing on the inside and bondo over it, then sand it down flush with the body, fine sand it, primer it a couple coats, then paint over. it is a bitch to get to, but not impossible. i also did this with my spoiler holes and my rear wiper hole.

p.s. the main reason it only lasted 2 years is because i didnt think to use that mesh stuff and used masking tape as a backing plate. dont do this.

Re: shaved antenna

im welding mine along with the sidemarker lights, luckily my quarter panel is off the car lol. Bondo will crack over time anyways with out a solid bonding surface. If anything use the mesh, then fiberglass over it, then bondo over that. Make sure you grind down to bare metal around the area being applied too.

mesh, fiberglass, sand, bondo, sand, prime, sand, paint, clear, sand. Wear gloves with the fiberglass, it will get tingly and start to burn on bare skin after a while. You dont absolutely have to just a warning though.

Re: shaved antenna

Just glue it that is how I have shave everything i have done. Just make sure you get the right glue. go to an auto body supply store and pick up a tube of metal adhesive that is how a lot of the people do it now it is done correctly. that way you have no warping of the metal from the heat of welding.

Re: shaved antenna

Fiberglass might be the best way to go. It may crack, though being such a small area it may not for a long time.

The problem with bondo is, yes it cracks.
The problem with welding on the body of your car, is it can cause it to rust quicker in that area. Though this is less like to be much of an issue where the antenna is.

That's just my 2 cents. Myself, I'd go with fiberglassing.

Re: shaved antenna

It will not rust, its covered by bondo/primer/paint/clear coat like the rest of your metal car. Now body panels can rust from the under side out. Which is 99% of the time what happens from not being covered properly (splash shields etc.) But the antenna area is in the trunk, so no water should hit it lol.

Metal adhesive works great too. Thats the way body shops repair bedsides/quarter panels/roof panels(or any welded on panel) 99% of the time these days. It saves alot of time and makes the shop money becuase your paying a flat rate of hours and it takes half the time of the quote. Basically you grind the spot welds, remove damaged panel. Then get the metal adhesive(there's different types with longer/shorter dry times). Put a solid bead (its just like caulking) on the area that would generally be spot welded then get 1,000,000,000 vice-grips and clamp it down TIGHT in the right position of course and let it sit over night. Thats it in a nutshell. I think i can change a bedside (truck bed side) in my sleep. They pay 8-10 hours and only take like 3-4 to do lol. Those make you a great deal of money. Yes if you glue your hand to something your royaly screwed.
