AMT 69 Baracuda
Hey guys I am just starting to build models again for the first time since in about 15yrs. A few quick questions though, to paint interiors what size/type brush should I use? I am using a 10/0 red sable but not sure if it my lack of skill or the brush, (I am guessing it is me...lol) also as for primer, does it matter which type? I see on the Tamiya website they offer 2 or 3 different kinds. just a little confused as the right one to buy. All your help is greatly appericated, thanks

This might be better in the main forum, not the WIP forum... unless you're about to post pics of said Barracuda Basic rule of thumb? Never use a brush for anything unless you have to. Small engine parts, small chassis parts fine, but not interior or body. You can use a nice normal set of brushes, they don't have to be Tamiya or Testors or whatever, but the majority of your painting should be done with an airbrush or spraypaint. Brushes on large flat surfaces (the body, front seats, etc) leave stroke marks. |

Re: AMT 69 Baracuda
Not sure where you are located. But most people can get by with duplicolor or wal mart color place paints. I use duplicolor primer, unless crazing has been experienced by myself or other forum members on certain kits. Big can for 4 bucks. I tend to use either the light or dark gray variant, cheap and locally available. As for blacks and aluminums. I use Wal Mart Color Place paints. The aluminum is a really good representative of the original. Hit it with some Color Place clear coat if you dont like the sheen. Also the gloss and flat black are VERY handy. As is the primer, which I use for NASCAR Roll Cages to resemble the gull gray. If you are picking out little details, such as guage bezels and things, I tend to use a toothpick. You dont have to worry about stray hairs on the brush touching the dash panel. I normally touch the lid to pick up the paint so as not to "load" too much paint. The tip can also be sharpened to get finer detail. If you notice a glob or drop of paint on the pick touch some scrap plasic or something. If you touch a guage bezel or face with it it will run all over. It is a somewhat tedious process, but very well worth it.

Re: AMT 69 Baracuda
thanks guys, I am in the U.S. I should have been a little more specific I guess, I have been spraying the body's, I have been trying to hand paint the details on the interior, which I am guessing why they are not that great looking. You mentioned that you spray the interior? do you just mask everything? on the doors and stuff? also how do I pick an airbrush on a budget? thanks for the replies please keep them coming.

Re: AMT 69 Baracuda
I typically assemble everything that will be the same color. engine block and intake, interior tub. sometimes it makes it hard to hit those hard to reach places, but, more often than not, you cannot see them once it is assembled. If you are doing multiple colors, then masking is required, or sometimes you can get away with spraying the interior one color, and then going back and hand painting the other. just use steady even strokes, trying to keep a wet edge to paint against. The two toned areas are generally small enough to not have an overly noticable area with brush strokes. As for an airbrush, do a forum search in the main forum. It has been discussed A LOT. I wouldn't go for cheap on the brush. I would start with a good IWATA or PAASCHE, if you have a hobby lobby near by, they will have an airbrushing section. I highly recommend an IWATA. You are looking at 75+ for the airbrush. And if you are just starting out, you can get by with a diaphragm type compressor to save a little on cost. You will definately want something with adjustable pressure, and a moisture trap. A pressure guage is desirable but not necessary. You could get out with an airbrush set up for under 200.

Re: AMT 69 Baracuda
I got a testors complete airbrush system, and it works very well
and is easy to clean. It comes with all you need to airbrush except paint for $195.00. Includes airbrush, compressor, color cup, mixing bottles, etc. |
