I love the 90 GTZ model with the 2.3L engine. It is a fast little car that saves gas to. It's also a manuel. That makes it even better. I got mine foe $600 in great shape till I wreacked it. So get a GTZ with a 2.3L engine.

If you find a 3.1 with a stick, you'll have lots of fun. The auto's are ok too, but the stick has a little hotter stock cam, and about 5-10 more hp.

found a 3.1 that needs a head gasket and intake manifold gasket. rust on the roof and trunk only 72k miles, 1996.

he's trying to get rid of it and i may just take it...

are these more difficult to work on than 88 camaros? because i have a friend who replaced the intake manifold gasket on his and it looked like a breeze..

The intake is fairly simple to change out. A lot of people mis-diagnose an intake leak on the 95-up 3100's as a head gasket leak, and change head gaskets unneccesarily. Do a compression test to verify the head gasket is leaking. You may only need to do an intake gasket job.

yea he said he wasn't sure which one it is. i can say i KNOW how to change the intake gasket. i've seen it done and it looks easy and tedious.

i offered him 550 and he said ok. i need it towed from northern VA to md 5 minutes from dc.

now i just need to find 550...

Re: OK i'm convinced, i want a beretta

The 2.3 made 180hp in stock form. The V6 made anywhere from 130-155hp depending on the year. Check out www.bstuff.com. if you're looking for a more performance oriented car, the GTZ with the quad4 2.3L engine is the way to go, it is the highest performance beretta ever produced.

Horsepower looks good on paper, but torque rules the street. That hi-po variant of the 2.3 is a ticking time-bomb, and makes no power under 4500 rpm.

The 2.3L Quad4 engine will destroy any 2.8, 3.1, or 3100 V6, stock for stock. Even with some bolt on mods such as a CAI and hi-flow exhaust on the V6's you wouldn't keep up with the stock Quad4. This is fact, not opinion. As far as the engine being a "ticking time bomb". The engines are as reliable as anything else out there, it's all in your routine maintenance.

The only time the V6's will take a jump on the Q4's is right off the line for maybe, at best, 1/8th mile because the V6's have more torque But we all know that a real race is done a 1/4 at a time, the V6's mentioned will in no way shape or form be able to beat the Q4 down the stretch. Plus the Q4 version of the GTZ is a 5speed, so that alone = more fun!

Re: OK i'm convinced, i want a beretta

uhh also the gtu's in 1988 gm only produced 3,814, in 1989 gm produced 9,813 ...may be something to think about, my buddy dave at GM tells me in a few years a mint gtu will be worth more than new back then.

Worth thinking about if you're after a collector. But it's gonna take more than a few years for that value to climb. I don't see why the GTZ's wouldn't be worth just as much, same idea and I believe there were fewer GTZ's produced each year than GTU's. Either way GTU/GTZ/Indy's will all be worth something someday, just not anytime soon.
