The Almighty 3400. Tell me about YOUR motor swap!
Has anybody here swapped this in? I finished the swap about 2 weeks ago now. Took me just under 20 hours to do, and it involved getting a custom front connecting mount made and alot of wiring headaches. Crossed a wire and ended up sizzling the entire dash harness so I had to rip that out as well.
After I replace the memcal so it runs properly, I shall be hitting a mid to low 14 second 1/4 mile at sea level. By the way, this was done in an 89 z24. Ill have pics up soon here. Just wondering if anybody else here has an alternative to the cheesy 3.1/2.8 that chevy gave us? |

Re: The Almighty 3400. Tell me about YOUR motor swap!
It was a pain in the ass yes, but its all worth it. The car is running at 75% capacity and I easily take 90% of the vehicles I see running around. Turbo talon was my fav. He ran a 15.1 at the track, I had him by 4 car lengths. The swaps you can do to a 2nd gen are amazing. I've seen 3.8 SC'd thrown in, 3400s, theres even a 3500 swap being done now, hes stuck on it though cause he cannot get the crank sensor to work with the obd1 setup on our cars.

Re: The Almighty 3400. Tell me about YOUR motor swap!
Good to hear someone is going against the stream, i've done plenty of motor and tranny swaps on the first gen cav's, so far they are all stock. Tell me this, did you bolt up a 5 speed to the new engine? and hopefully you did not pick the 3400 out of those montana vans, as every one i've seen so far has blown the intake gasket-thus leaking coolant into the engine. Though this problem could be linked to the weight of said van, keep your eye on it and best of luck.

Re: The Almighty 3400. Tell me about YOUR motor swap!
There's a lot of guys on v6z24.com that have the 3400 swap in a 2nd gen. 60degreev6.com has a bunch of other cars. I'm assuming by the way your posts sound, that you have a 2nd gen. You might be able to suck a bit more power out of that with a chip from 60degreev6.com's store. Or, there might be a couple guys with a chip specifically for the 3400 swap.
The 3500 would be rough. But, I thought it's possible to have the 52x reluctor wheel taken off, then replaced with the 7x wheel. That should make the crank sensor work just fine. Though, that's not a simple procedure. For myself, I've also done a 3400 swap. But mine's in a 3rd gen.... so it's quite a bit harder to do... electriacally anyways. |
