Unhappy hard start issue

When you go to start it (305 ingine) , it cranks over like the motor is swelled. Very hard to turn over. Battery is new, starter was checked and is good. Its so hard to crank that I can see slight amounts of smoke from the starter. But, if it starts, motor runs just fine, no motor noises, no smoke, and was never overheated or raced. So, any ideas on what this could possibly be. Also, it happened very suddenly and burned one fuseable link wire, which was replaced.

Re: hard start issue

How was the starer tested, out of car? You need to do a draw test with it in the car, sounds like either a wiring (battery cables) or failing starter.

Re: hard start issue

it was tested out of the car. How exactly do I draw test it or what should I look for on the battery wires ?

Re: hard start issue

Loose, broken or corrosion on the wires.

And an Amp draw test on the starter, obviously tho if the motor runs normal when it is started, and there's enough load to smoke the thing, the amperage draw must be excessive because of resistamnce in the starter motor.

Re: hard start issue

ok, because I had the starter tested at checker automotive on the machine and it sounded fine, so what would make it have a draw in the car ? Wires all look good from the battery to the starter, can see no more burnt fuseable link wires. Is there a sure fire way to test starter in car like with a volt/ohm meter or something ?

Re: hard start issue

You'll need to hook up a ammeter. Here is the basic question at hand tho, how old is the starter? Where was it bought, who manufactured it? The bench test dosen't put any real load on it. If you are 100% certain the cables are ok, then I'd condemn the starter almost immediately.

Re: hard start issue

the starter is around 1 year old, delco is the make. Thank you for the information. I will go get a replacement starter a.s.a.p. I will then post here what the outcome was. Take care and thanks once again.
