Exclamation Race gas, 93oct pump gas + MOTH BALLS??

ok, so i read that you can increase the octain of gasoline. anyone ever tried this? i know the moth balls have to be naphthalene (s/p) based and such, but it just seems weird to drop a few moth balls into my gas tank, then fill it up... but if it works... hell! anyone?

this really would work? how much would it boost the octain? beacuse if its some small amount thats not even worth it, then why bother... but if it really works, i'ed like to know what mixture works the best.

Yeah you would want to use Xylene...I think thats how you spell it...but there was a big write up on it a while back.

Yup thats what I run from time to time.

Here are some info on homemade oct boosters.
http://www.dsmtalk.com/forums/showth...threadid=23700
http://forums.turbobricks.com/showthread.php?t=11771

Read those, it tells you how much to mix and what the kind of octane rating you will get.

Re: Race gas, 93oct pump gas + MOTH BALLS??

well you can use standard paint thiner which has Xylene and toulene this is the mix you want as toulene is the #1 mix in most octane boosters,Xylene is harder to find by its self but its usaully found in the higher priced octane boosters, but as i said a standered can of paint thinner is both mixed with minerals to clean fuel injectors and shit.if you use paint thinner make sure you add some tranny fluid for lubrication, not sure how much but if you check you can find out.i remember reading about this somewhere.hope i helped later guys.

Re: Race gas, 93oct pump gas + MOTH BALLS??

ok,but when you do it you need some sort of lubricating agent and most people use auto tranny fluid.and if you dont believe anyone but kevin, then pm him
here ya go..for 8 16oz bottles

100 oz of toluene for octane boost
25 oz of mineral spirits (cleaning agent/"fuel injector cleaner!" not required in the mix!)
3 oz of transmission fluid (lubricating agent)

Re: Race gas, 93oct pump gas + MOTH BALLS??

Trans fluid will work. If I were to try this though I would use Marvels Mystery Oil for the lube, but that's just me. It's an oil that was meant to be burned in the CC, so it seems like a better option IMO. Either way, just be sure to use something. The toulene/xylene mixes are a long time proven method for increasing octane.

I still say race gas is the way to go. It's engineered for this task, not cobbled together. I don't like to cut corners to save a buck or two when I'm pushing the limits. In fact I pay 9.50 a gallon for the Sunoco 117 I run. It hurts the wallet, but so do toasted motors.

For constant street use, something like a meth/alky kit is worth looking into. People are having impressive results with that stuff lately!

Re: Race gas, 93oct pump gas + MOTH BALLS??

It will certainly help if done correctly. I have seen some MEAN setups. The example I like to use is one about a guy on the DSMlink forums. He posted a log indentical to the one I got from my 11.3 at 126 run. The difference was I was on 10 dollar per gallon race fuel, and he was on pump with water/meth injection. And in fact, he went out and trapped 126 mph with it as well, and then even better eventually. He had quite the setup though. I recomend lots of research. I could sum up what I Think works based on other's results, but I have never tried it, so you would be better off to look into it on your own. See if you can find this guy on the national forums, I believe his name was Ron Francis, Lokmeup as a screen name. I think he even had a web page made with details of his setup.

FWIW, I'm thinking of trying something like this. Water/alky/meth injection is immensely popular with EVOs (most poeple use a prebuilt kit available from the EVO vendors, like the Snow kit, look into that one, even summit carries it IIRC). I'd like to try something a little different though, like what Ron did.
