Exclamation 96 Jetta will only run while I spray carb cleaner

1996 Jetta 2.0 manual trans. The bastard just quit this morning and I can't figure it out. I am sure I am missing someothing simple. I checked the gas and the spark. It is getting both. I haven't worked on anything for a while but I think the spark may be weak (Isn't it supposed to be blue?) It's orange
Pulled the fuel line off the fuel rail it is pumping good. Took the distributor cap off cleaned it and the rotor both looked pretty good. Just a little white. Sprayed carb cleaner on the MAF sensor .

It will only stay running as long as I am spraying carb cleaner directly into the engine.
I need help ASAP it is setting in a neighborhood that is .......well let's just say that I have removed anything of value that wasn't too heavy to carry.

Re: 96 Jetta will only run while I spray carb cleaner

I had a friend with that problem it turned out to be a bad cold start injector.
its an extra injector located on the intake manifold, it works with the ETS. When it goes bad it causes a difficult or no start condition in hot weather.

Hope this points you in the right direction.

Question Re: 96 Jetta will only run while I spray carb cleaner

Where exactly is it supposed to be I looked for an extra injector but could not find one.
And this is probably a stupid question but what is the ETS?

Re: 96 Jetta will only run while I spray carb cleaner

it wont run at all with out starting fluid or you have to use starting fluid to get it started? if it wont run at all see if you injectors are working you could have fuel up to the injectors but if they dont work your car wont run

yeaaaah...... i tink your car is not injecting gas...that's why when you inject fuel it works.
Check fuses or starter relay.

The above responses are on the money. It's not injecting fuel. You said the fuel pressure is ok to the header. I'd check this out first. Just because fuel drains out doesn't mean you have appropriate pressure. Check for engine codes.
