4.10 Gears?

okay im trying to grasp this gear ratio pinion to ring and figure out wich ones to use in my t.a i need somewhat of a highway friendly gear and and weekend drag gear....so in short a dailey driver and still able to give good numbers at the track...now with 4.10 i get a 3751 rpm at 65 (if my math is correct) seeing as i have the th-400 (only three gears) the highway is not my friend.... any inputs on what gears would be the best for street/strip

Also i drive the highway everday to school for about 10 miles..this is why taller gears are a most but i still want good acceleration..thanks

Re: 4.10 Gears?

3.23 or 3.42.
Probably the 3.23.

Hard to pick a good gear for both when you only have 3 gears.
Depends on the transmissions gears as well. Is 3rd gear 1:1???

Agreed, 4.10 and 3.73 are absolutely out of the question.

Re: 4.10 Gears?

3.23 sounds good but to get optimum peformance with your gears...it goes by how tall the tire is. Go with richmond btw there great

Re: 4.10 Gears?

There isn't much difference between 3,23's and 3.42's but every little bit of acceleration helps. So I say go with 3.42's if you can.

Re: 4.10 Gears?

personally i think 3.23 is too high.its not a light car and i doubt u have a high stall speed converter.i had 3.73s in my 97 mustang and it seemed like a good combo to me.the 4.6 isnt a great torque engine so the gears really helped the acceleration but allowed for ok highway speed.anything lower would have been too low tho.i also drove about 80 miles each way to and from work on the highway and made numerous trips of anywhere from 200 to 600 miles comfortably.if u have 4.10s i would say keep them, but besides 4.10 my favorite is 3.73. i believe i have 3.42 in my truck and theyre too high for the engine/tranny combo.

Re: 4.10 Gears?

Get a T56

Seriously, with a 3 speed tranny and a v8 you cannot balance fuel economy and acceleration. The only way to really get this is with a new tranny.

But then again, if this is out of your price range, follow the others' advice

Re: 4.10 Gears?

i think swapping a t56 6 spd into his T/A is probably a little more work than he wants to do.not to mention the fact that he has a really nice original looking UN-TRASHED 79 T/A.there r a lot of us out here that appreciate the fact that he has not turned it into a pro street rolling summit racing advertisement.my mother had a beautiful T/A with a 403 when she was young so ive always had a fondness for these cars that i never really developed for camaros.i would say if he wants to put in 3.23s for highway use it doesnt matter if the car is slow as anything, its a sweet ride.sorry to get all emotional haha i just feel kinda strong about cutting up these cars cuz there really arent too many nice ones left.and lets not forget that with a built 400 its still gonna get up and go with higher gears.

Re: 4.10 Gears?

hey i'm new at this, this is my first thread that i'm posting, i know a little about lt1's but i'm trying to learn more. but anyway i have a 97 firebird formula automatic. I have changed the exterior of the car to look like the ws.6 trans am. i believe i have 2.73 gears. what are some good gears to change into, and how will this help my performance? I do plan on changing my transmission to 6 speed manual some day.

Re: 4.10 Gears?

Hey Bandit if you got to do any highway driving at all dont go with the 3.73
I put them in my 79 with a 403 th350( which has the same 1:1 3rd gear ratio as the th400) the most you will want to go with is probly the 3.23, i love the 3.73 gears but i pay at the pump with the 3 speed auto.

also watch for what gears you have in it already mine had the 2.42s which uses a diffrent carrier than the 2.73 and up, costly if you dont know about it
the only for sure way of telling is to talk off the cover and count the number of teeth on each gear and divide the # on the ring gear by # on the pinion gear.
