96 Windstar CO code

I have a 96 Windstar and am getting a code 'CO' on the Digital instrument panel. Can anyone tell me what this means and how to go about fixing.
Thanks

Re: 96 Windstar CO code

It has to do with the fuel pump wiring, or the pump, or the fuel pump module wiring at the cluster. It may be best to take it to a mechanic.

Re: 96 Windstar CO code

Hi,

From the OEM manual:

- The diagnostic bars appearing on the fuel bar gauge are accompanied by a CS or a CO in the distance to empty display.

- The CS display indicates that a short circuit exists or that fuel sender resistance is to low

- The CO display indicates that an open circuit exists or that fuel sender resistance is too high.

The pinpoint tests for CO are complicated in that they require the mech to access the fuel level sender, which is integral to the pump, which requires them to drop the tank. If that doesn't check out, it requires them to pull the instrument cluster to test the fuel level sensor.

So, I believe you are only dealing with faulty fuel level sensing, which is a nuisance, but you can probably live with it if you keep an eye on mileage since last fueling.

Good luck
