Re: '97 Accord Fuel Filter

You don't really check a fuel filter...you just replace them. Check out the IMPORTANT thread at the top of the Accord page and you can find a link to free service manuals. Get the one for your car. Basically I think a fuel filter should be replaced every 30k. Some would say more, but bottom line, if you are over 60k, it's definantly time to replace.

First disconnect electricity to teh fuel pump, then crank the engine a few times to get the pressure out of the lines. Then once located, just break the banjo bolts loose and swap it. Pretty easy, usually it's just a pain breaking the bolts loose. Some PB blaster and a breaker bar will help, but this is usually one of htose repairs that you end up scraping up your knuckles on but it's usually pretty straight forward. I don't know where it is on a 97, so you may have to remove the battery or a wiper fluid tank or something if it isn't in plain view. The service manual or even your owners manual should tell you where it is though.

Also, you could use some STP fuel treatment to clean your injectors, but removing them and getting htem cleaned isn't worth it. If you want better fuel economy, change your fluids/filters, check your tire pressure, fill up your gas tank to full every time, and concentrate on your driving habits...accelerate slower, don't speed, shift earlier, etc. Most people don't realize how much their driving habits effect mileage.
