Tranny problem, where's reverse?

Well Seems like a simple question, but my friend has basicly lost reverse on his car, out of no where.. I guess he said last I parked it on a hill, and then after that, he can't find reverse on the car anymore.

The car is a 98 Spyder, not sure on the motor, he said something about it being swapped for a larger 4cylinder motor, like the largest 4 that they have for his car.

Any ideas what may be going on? I hate the idea of taking appart his tranny, but if that's what I have to do, oh well.

Re: Tranny problem, where's reverse?

Reverse?... Ok... To the far right and back. I'm gonna have to assume your talking about a 5-speed and the actual shifter here... Definetly not enough details...

Re: Tranny problem, where's reverse?

Alright, so i talked to my friend some more, and felt it for myself. When you go to place it in reverse, feels like it's blocked. You can't even push it in a little. Reminds me of a car that has a switch to press before you can push it into reverse.. But he says there is no switch tigger or anything you press to put it into reverse.

At this point my fear is something terribly wrong with the tranny.. but I don't know..

And yes it's a 5 speed.

Re: Tranny problem, where's reverse?

Hmm... I was gonna suggest the syncros being bad, but reverse doesn't have any... Something could be broke inside and blocking the reverse gears.

Re: Tranny problem, where's reverse?

Have you tried to put the shifter all the way to the left between 1st and 2nd and then puttin in reverse. It does have like a safety switch so dumbasses don't try puttin in reverse doin 100 on the interstate. lol

Reverse isn't to the left on any 90-99's that I know of dude... Maybe it is in newer Eclipses with 6 speeds, but not in ours.

I think u misunderstood what i was tryin to say. On alot of 5-speeds there is a safety switch inbetween 1 and 2. hence all the way to the left. and then come back to the right and down to put it in R.

Re: Tranny problem, where's reverse?

only saftey switch is on 5th gear and that only prevents you from going from 5th to reverse my guess is an internal problem. Is there and grinding problems in any other gear?

Re: Tranny problem, where's reverse?

I know mine gets stuck every once in a while and it takes a minute to get it in R. I don't know if maybe the release trigger gets stuck or what? Oh and sorry for the misunderstandin blackcrow.

Its all good. I thought you were talkin more along the lines of how a 6 speed is setup, so it was partially my misunderstanding too. lol

They all get stuck sometimes when you try to put it into reverse cause there are no syncronizers in that gear. If you can't get it in, just put the clutch in and give it a rev and try again. Sometimes it works and sometimes it just grinds then. lol

Re: Tranny problem, where's reverse?

If the car is off will it go in then? If it does then try to while its running, go into another gear first like 1st or 2nd. I use to out of habit go 1st, 2nd, Reverse because I had a hard time getting it in gear with out a grind other wise.
