95 Olds Cutlass Supreme strange rattling noise under car. (?)

I recently purchased a 95 Olds Cutlass Supreme 3.1L V6, automatic trans, with 181,000 miles. Everything seems to be running near perfect. The only issue I am having is an elusive "rattling/creaking" noise that begins quietly and becomes gradually louder until it suddenly stops. It originates from directly behind the center console, underneath the car. The noise seems to occur only when the car is in drive. I have no idea what is causing this, but it is extremely annoying. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

By "behind the center console", do you mean under the dash toward the front of the car, or behind the driver from the back seat area?
