Transmission problems

Hello. My husband has a '90 190E Mercedes. He was having problems with his transmission so he took it to a mechanic. But the car still doesn't feel quite right. The shifts change too fast and it kind of "dies", like it doesn't have any power. He's been changing it manually, but I know that can't be right. Any suggestions?
