Question Rim Width Range

I've got a '97 Prelude with the stock 16x6.5 wheels and 205/50 16 tires. I love the wheels, but would like slightly wider tires. I have noticed that most tire specs list the rim width range for a 225/50 16 tire to be between 6 - 8 inches. Would this be a realistic tire size for my 6.5 inch rims? Would it balloon badly, and what would be the negative effects of this? Lastly, are there certain brands of tires that tend to react better when fitted on smaller rims?
