Water Pump Leaking - Need Help?

To All,

You've helped me before, so here goes:

Pretty bad coolant leak under driver's front end - notice each morning and coolant level drops in reservoir. This morning the puddle was about about a foot across - so no longer can be ignored. I looked under the car and checked the radiator (which I replaced 2 yrs ago) - all ok. So I jacked the car up to research the leak from the underside. i have traced it back to the water pump impeller shaft on the belt pulley. So it sounds like a replacement, right? (1st question).

So, assuming I have to replace the water pump....how? I have the manuals but they really aren't much help. Can someone who has done this before walk me through this? Or better yet...is there any information (with pictures) online anywhere? Finally where can I get the water pump removal tool - there was a recent post with alink to NTX tools - is that what I need?

Any other help is greatly appreciated. Thanks as always.

Brian.

Re: Water Pump Leaking - Need Help?

I am having the same problem and slowly getting the tools in. Just ordered the a Water Pump Removal Socket from JCWhitney for $23.99 made by Performance Tools.

I found the link from: GM Water Pump Removal/Installer Socket

You can also order the Snap-On one which cost $79.99.

I will report back to my earlier post how well my project goes for my Water Pump.

Re: Water Pump Leaking - Need Help?

Thanks for the replies so far.

As far as my dealer loaning me a tool - not a chance. I got the "you could bring it in, or buy the tool from snap-on probably $100 though". No thanks - and the tool only costs about $30, delivered.

Oh well looks like the only risk is if the water pump does not want to budge. I am not interestedin using any flames under the hood, nor do I want to buy a heat gun.

Anyway, any add'l info appreciated. I will post on my progress.

By the way, anyone have a waterpump removal tool they want to rent for a few bucks, or sell?

Thanks again.

Brian. 1997, 130k and going strong.............
