AE86 pickup...

Today I was going through all my woebegotten old kits, half builds, failures and such to rationalise my collection a little..
I found an AE86 I had been working on, unfortunately a drunk girl at a party had squashed it and cracked the B and C pillars on the right hand side. Then I repaired it...but the paint went wrong, so back in the box and there it stayed.
I looked at it for a minute, and as I was about to throw the box away, my mind said...PICKUP!
(Actually, I thought UTE! not pickup, as I'm Australia. But most of you will be from the Northern Hemisphere)..

Anyway, I just had a play for an hour or so, and I think its a project worth continuing. I (roughly) chopped off most of the broken roof, reinforced the broken B-pillar, and began building a rear bulkhead for the cabin in styrene sheet. The window aperture shape is a beta - if anyone has any good ideas for the window shape to make it look more "factory" then a rectangle let me know - and I'm considering carving the rearend up to make a tailgate (but I feel it would ruin the lines somewhat).

No idea on colour as yet - I do very much like this though; And I can quite easily resculpt the front lip to resemble the URAS item.

Re: AE86 pickup...

Neat project. Maybe look into the style of the back windows of the '80s Hilux. You know the little sliding window would be pretty cool.

Re: AE86 pickup...

I think you're on to something here. Looks pretty good so far. I think that green would be perfect.

Re: AE86 pickup...

This is going to look pretty cool. For the rear window, please do not make it a rectangle. Instead make it like all pick-ups are and go up to the b-pillar. For reference pics of s10s are easily found on google. Also may I suggest making the whole body level and laying it out, maybe on some 18's. Whatever you decide to do its going to look cool, just dont leave that rear window as a rectangle. Keep up the good work man!

I think you're onto something with the window profile. That rear bulkhead is just a mockup/template in thin plastic sheet. I think I will angle the sides of the window slightly and add a raised "seal", the lower half of the bulkhead will probably be a textured surface aka hilux. It will have a rollcage penetrating the sheet metal so I can't go right to the B-pillars with the window, but I will radius it somewhat.
I will be building a flat floor for the bed, and am trying to figure out how to make some semi realistic inner wheelarches/shock mounts.
I also really like the idea about a 2 piece slider window - I think I will do that.

I won't be going 18s, its definitely going to be rolling on Aoshima stretchwalls - I have a choice of Longchamp XR4, SSR MK1, Starsharks, Hayashi Street, hard to choose which one. Actually might buy some of the volk mesh ones...

Re: AE86 pickup...

I didn't know you were adding a roll cage, in that case make it drift inspired

Re: AE86 pickup...

that'd be a great project!

hmmm...was the drunk girl a hottie? if so, it makes her squashing the hachi's body a bit more bearable.
