Smile Please help if you can.

I just purchased a 1990 safari van with a 4.3. The motor was bad and had it replaced. Now you have to push the gas pedal to get it to start and when it does it runs very rough and has black smoke. After a few seconds the van will run smoother and idle but it still smells very rich. Any ideas what would cause this? I am going broke and dont want to take it back to a shop for repair.

Re: Please help if you can.

Have you checked/replaced the o2 sensor, coolant temp sensor, or the throttle position sensor? When you have it running look at the injector spray pattern, if it is dripping then you may need to replace the injector and or the fuel pressure regulator. You should also check the timing.
