odometer stopped?

Has anyone had their trip meter and their odometer stop on then? And if so does anyone know how I can fix it?
The trip meter started working slow, then when we came out of the grocery store, and restarted the car, the odemeter and trip meter had quit working all together. If you hit the trip button a few times it sometimes will start to work for a bit, then go out again.
The tac and the speedo still work, im completly baffled because if it is the VSS wouldn't my speedo and tac stop aswell?
I have checked the other posts and the haynes manual and haven't found a solution to this problem.
How can you tell if its a bad connection?
Could someone give me a link or something as to how I can fix this problem, please

I recall several posts on the trip meter issue. I don't recall any solid answers. I think it is a mechanical problem within the instrument panel, possibly lubrication where the trip meter disengages from the odometer and resets. A spring re-engages the trip meter to the odometer. The instrument panel is driven by a motor powered by the VSS which is an electrical current generator. The speedo cable is eliminated leaving the speedo and odometer similar to cable driven.

The tachometer is a separate instrument from the speedo which measures engine speed and gets its signal from the Cam Position Sensor inside the distributor.

You are correct, if the VSS were the cause the speedo will not work either. Also an automatic trans will not have a clue what to do next because without the VSS signal the computer sends a message to the trans that the wheels are not turning.

Yeah sme thing on 2000 Expedition. My Altima hasn't done anything like this but yes yo have to get a new instrument panel. It's a real pain in the ass that you can't work with or fix the cluster.

Thanks for all the help guys, I just got done doing a car fax report on my my new baby and it turns out this won't be the 1st time the I. cluster has been replaced on it.
