I've been looking into putting a new engine into a 1985 Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham(RWD) but I can't find anything on how much room I have to use under the hood. Any info would be appreciated.


My Cadillac has a 4.1 V8 I've been looking at the 4.4 V8 in the GM Performance book as a swap is this a good move or not???? anyone??

Which 4.4 liter V8 is this? The new one for the Cadillac V-series? If so, that's quite the expensive engine! Or do you mean the Cadillac 4.5 liter engine?
Either way, what are you looking to do to the car? Do you just want to get it running again, or are you looking for more power?

i'm trying to get more horsepower but i'm not trying to "hot rod" it also. I want to keep it original as much as possible. i was told today it all depends on the crossmember the engine is sitting on. the new 4.4(xlr engine) is too big for the crossmember its sitting on right now. so i have to do more research.

I want to fix this ride because i told my son (who loves caddillacs) that i'll give it to him soon as he goes to college or does something amazing after he finishes high school. So i have about 6 years to get this done for him.

I'd stay away from the 4.4 liter XLR-V engine. That's a supercharged engine that is probably at least $12,000 complete for a used one! Plus you'd need a transmission to hook it to, and a rear end to handle the power.
Your best bet would to maybe install a 350 chevy and a TH350 or TH400 transmission. It will fit perfect in your car, and the later Fleetwood Broughams came with 350 Chevys. Depending on the emmisions laws where you are, you could also install a earlier Cadillac 368, 425, 472 or 500 cube engine. Those will all fit as well. My 1979 Deville is the same basic chassis as your car and I now have a 472 in it.
So there's a lot of options for you!

how about the crossmember i was talking to a friend and he said it all depends on the crossmember and how the engine is mounted to that. is there anyway that it can be modified and done to where it can sit a 350?? my original plan is to put a 350 but since i saw the 4.4 in the catalog and thought i have a 4.1 its not much of a difference but there's a huge difference.

basically it all depends on how the crossmember is built on my cadillac. i know 79-81 have 350 and i was wondering if i can take some of those crossmember off and install into my vehicle, i can even take the engine and tranny from any of those vehicles from 79-81 and just take the parts and rebuild the engine for my vehicle. i really dont care much about the emissions cuz i have ways around if you know what i mean. hahaha.

I don't think the front crossmember on those cars was ever changed. Just the mounting brackets for the different engines. That chassis stayed basically the same from 1977-1996.

Hello, not sure if I'm posting on this right?

I have a 1958 Coupe DeVille and as of late I also have a 1974 Coupe DeVille. The 74 Deville has been converted to a 500. I am planning a major conversion, were I will be removing the body from the '74 and replacing it with the '58. My question is what performance retro looking items are available for the 500, 3 duce's, dual 4's, headers, aluminum valve covers etc? . I would love to install a manual transmission also but don't know were to start with that one. Any advise on the conversion would be appreciated.

Welcome to AF. Don't, why get involved with a undertaking like this there is " 0" compatability between the 2 cars. Plenty of speed parts for the 500, just google search for the various companies out there.
