here are some jokes on the yugo:
Q-how do u make a yugo move faster on a descent? A-turn off the engine. Q-what do u call a Yugo with brakes ? A- customized. Q-why do Yugos have heated rear windows? A-to keep your hands warm when pushing them. Q-how do u make a yugo go faster? A-a tow truck. Q-wat goes on page 4-5 of a yugo user's manual? A-the bus and train schedule. oh and here is another joke: If Mircosoft mergered with car manufacteurs...The airbag system would say "are you sure?" before going off. Hey people,
It just so happens that Yugo is a great tunning car. In Yugoslavia where they are made (and so was I) they are very popular race cars. They are cheap, they are striped down already, and have enought room in engine bay to fit two more honda engines. The fact is still that they are way past their time. They might have looked cool in europe in 50's but not today. Tehnologily they are far beyond today's cars, but they are still fun to race around. . |

Re: Yugo racecar-why?
Everyone by now has heard the "Yugo rear window defogger keeps your hands warm" joke...
Here's one I made up... In 1991, the last year for the Yugo to be sold in the US, they made a substantial improvement in the driveability of the car by adding the option of a 3-speed automatic transmission. This $495 option improves your Yugo driving experience by allowing you to put the car into gear and automatically stall the engine without using the clutch. |

Re: Yugo racecar-why?
How do you double the value of a Yugo?
Fill the tank up.

Interestingly enough, if you took a look at the page the "performance" Yugos were on you would have also noticed a plethora of Fiats and Bertone X1/9's. Guess what, these cars all shared an engine and many chassis components. Even though the Fiat engine was developed sometime in the late 60's and was never a particular barnstormer, it's a rather healthy engine and in the X1/9 it was a pleasant alternative to the Triumph Spitfire or MG Midget.
Most Yugo tuners are Fiat fans who find the car's to be quaint little Fiat refugees. The cars compete in bottom rung class autocross and club racing events (G Production, if I'm not mistaken) alongside of such other performance luminaries as the Volkswagen Rabbit, Austin-Healey Sprite, and other such less than 1300cc engined cars. They're cheap and have a tunable engine that responds well to a pair of Weber DCOE's and an ANSA exhaust, why not take them to an autocross event?
