Nearly cuts out...1992 CV

When I apply the accelerator just a little bit, while driving or in PARK, the car stumbles and nearly cuts off unless I stop giving it gas. Sometimes the engin will race over fast while at idle too and then cut down again. The check engin light goes a bit nuts when I start up then it just stays on. Starting is fine, no trouble there.

Advice/Ideas?

Possibly the throttle positioning sensor. If you have an analog voltmeter, you can check it fairly easily. One wire will have approximately 5 volts, one will have 0 volts(ground) and one will have a varying voltage. Check the variable voltage while SLOWLY working the throttle to wide open. The voltage should steadily increase. If the sensor is dropping out, voltage will drop instead of constantly rising. It should start from about .6 or .7 volt and climb to 4.5 volt or hightr.

Your check engine light is trying to tell you something, you might want to see just what that is. Doing a KOER test wouldn't hurt at this point.

And how does one do a KOER test? I've never heard of that before, what's involved?

Ford uses KOEO = Key On Engine Off and KOER = Key On Engine Running. They are different ways to access codes.
See if you can make any sense of this.

Your best bet is to use a scan tool, this will put the car into test mode for you. Try this link

I figured it out after a little while, and the code I got was...

157 - Mass Air Flow signal is/was low or grounded - MAF.

I unplugged the MAF and the car runs perfectly now and has a nice increase in power. Is it ok to run with the MAF unplugged until I get one, will it do anything to hurt?...I notice the CEL is on now all the time.

You can get some electrical contact cleaner and try to clean the MAF wires. Just spray on the wires and do not use anything to wipe them with. Let it air dry and install to see if it is any better. Use a cleaner that does not leave a residue. All you are going to do if you run it unplugged is use a little more fuel. The PCM is placed in a default mode with the sensor disables.

I will try that. To clean the MAF should I remove those tamper proof screws and pull the sensor out of its housing, or just spray through the pipe without removing it?...I read that you can do it through the pipe. If it does require cleaning, should I be able to tell just via eye inspection?

Also, how much extra fuel are we talkin'?....

You can clean it either way. If you remove it, you can make sure you get all the dirt off of it. Fuel should be in the 2 to 3 mpg range.
