Red colour choice for Xanavi GT-R R34

Hi everyone, just a quick question. I've recently got my hands on the Tamiya Xanavi GT-R R34 and it says in the manual to use Italian Red TS-8....but since the LHS didn't have it in stock for a while, I got Bright Red TS-49 instead.

Do you think it'll still work out ok with the decals blending into the paintwork? Or should I return the TS-49 and wait for the TS-8 which I won't know when it'll be...? Really wanna make a start on the kit too so am not prepared to wait long for the LHS to have it in stock.

Re: Red colour choice for Xanavi GT-R R34

Oh... this is very very good question as I am starting builing my Nismo GTR R34...I am thinking either put Cobra Colors' Ferrar 1981 -97 Rosso Corsa or 98-2006 Rosso Corsa on it.

Re: Red colour choice for Xanavi GT-R R34

I guess you'll some trouble with a color different than the TS8: this color may match unperfectly the real thing but match very good the decals colors: at least after clear is difficult recognize decals and paint. The TS49 would be an approach to the "Rosso Scuderia" but isn't enought fluo to me.

If you want an encouragement start from the chassis and internal stuff, enjoy and add a bit of details and CF and wait for TS8 or choose other sources for it.

>TireGiant: I haven't tried (not at least I can't) Leon's stuff, he could say something, but TS8 isn't really near to Lecher mixed rosso corsa (late kind).

Re: Red colour choice for Xanavi GT-R R34

Use the TS-8 Italian Red and paint it over white, not silver, that means mask the body for the silver, then mask the body and paint the red. Otherwise the red on the decals will NOT match. TS-49 is WAY too bright to match the decals.
Ironically, the TS-17 Gloss aluminum can be substituted with the Mica Silver and still match the decals. But I would not use the Mica Silver unless I was going to clear coat as it is not as glossy as the Gloss Aluminum. (I've built two of them and one of the Nismo 350Zs...) - Mark

Re: Red colour choice for Xanavi GT-R R34

Well I bought the TS-17 and the TS-49, hoping the Bright Red would still work. I always use Halfords grey primer and then spray over that.

So you're saying spray the whole body with the TS-17 and then mask it for the Italian Red? Coz I've got a very bad WIP R34 sprayed with Bright Red and I used that to compare the colours and seems ok;

Without flash,

With flash,

Do you think from the photos it'll still work? It's not that I don't appreciate your advice, just I'm trying to save myself from having to buy another can.

Edit: Used MS Paint to take do a comparison and Bright Red is a tad darker, lol.

Re: Red colour choice for Xanavi GT-R R34

I replaced TS-17 with TS-30. As after clear coat on TS30 chrome silver, it look like TS-17 minus the flake on the silver. The real car do not have the flake spot. TS-8 is correct color for Tamiya matching decals, but not accuate for real car. If you heard before Studio 27 Xanavi decal (only the sponsers and the silver decal included), you can spray TS-49 as it's the closes to real car. Maybe you could try Scale-Master way of doing it.

Re: Red colour choice for Xanavi GT-R R34

Great tips on the paint! Thanks, I'm also working in this car
And, by the way, does anybody have pics of the interior of this car? I haven't found any.

Thanks

Re: Red colour choice for Xanavi GT-R R34

Ye that's what's bothering me, fact that I can see with my own eyes they match pretty well.... Makes me think how much off Italian Red is but I'm juggling the decision in my head right now if I should buy a new can or not . TS-17's already on so it's just waiting the red now. Finish line in sight, just several hurdles in my way.

(I've lost one of the wheel nuts )

I can send you a resin cast of the wheel nut if you like. I just last week made a mold and ran off some copies for another project.

Re: Red colour choice for Xanavi GT-R R34

it won't work. Also, be sure to apply the red over a white primer (not gray nor over the silver paint) or the decals won't match.

It's a paint, but you really have to have the perfect shade or some decal will look awful (I did the mistake on mine to paint the red over the silver... I won't do the same with my next Z.)

Edit: the decal that will be a real problem is the Xanavi on the hood and top. Both of them will look horrible. (tips: cut every single letter with an X-acto to remove the red from the decals... hard, pain, but if you don't have the good shade, it's the only way)

Re: Red colour choice for Xanavi GT-R R34

Thanks for the great link petesy. Aww man, I've already sprayed the silver on to the grey primer . I'm not really in a position to buy white primer just for this neither. Just been down to LHS and got myself the TS-8 finally! But if you and Scale-Master say to do it over a white base, then I think it might be too late. Thanks again for the feedback everyone, really does help. Time to update the actual post now, lol.
