No vtec! please help!
Just got ahold of a 88 crx with jdm b16 w/ vtec controller (apexi), anyway, car runs great and vtec controller works fine, but vtec is not engaging. I was told it is bad vtec solenoid....is there any way i could test it? I would hate to buy a new one and not have it be that! Car seems to be wired fine and every thing works except vtec. Any ideas?

Re: No vtec! please help!
let's see. my magic eight ball says... oil pressure??? vtec gasket bad??? is there oil leaking anywhere??? under the solenoid??? is the compression good???
my vtec went out on me when i first got the car. it was because of the #3 piston rings. it made me lose oil pressure in the higher rpms and vtec would shutoff. and it could just be a bad solenoid. if it is, ebay, looking at $50 to $120 for a good one.

Re: No vtec! please help!
have you done a continuity test on the wires? ohm check? voltage check?

Re: No vtec! please help!
if you know someone with a solenoid you could always swap to see if it is the solenoid itself.

Re: No vtec! please help!
If you're low on oil VTEC will not engage. VTECs burn oil...just the nature of the beast.

Re: No vtec! please help!
I'm sorry but I gotta know, is the vtec-less b16, even close to a d16 or is it still faster? I hated runnin my h22a without vtec... anyways this is a stupid thought, but the engine is warmed up? also...check ur engine grounds.
It really might be the VTEC controller messing with the ecu.

Re: No vtec! please help!
Motor has oil......im guessing its the ecu/controller because car runs great till about 5500-6k rpm then it just feels like it runs out of air....feels exactly like a ls (b18a).....would be a good race between a d16 vtec and me but i dont wana push it, dont wana bend a valve or something...
