91 Caravan Trans Shift Problem

1991 Caravan with a 3.0 - will not shift out of what feels like 1st gear. What could be the problem? It does NOT slip, It still has torque, so I don't feel that the Trans itself is bad. Please help...

Thanks,
AL

Re: 91 Caravan Trans Shift Problem

Sounds like you have the electronic 4-speed automatic (P-R-N-D-3-L). You are experiencing "limp mode". In limp mode, the transmission defaults to and locks into the 2nd gear range until you shut off the ignition. Restarting the van will reset the transmission, but a serious problem will switch it back into limp mode again. Your owner's manual describes this condition. If you don't have an owner's manual, search this forum for key words "limp mode" and read all about it.
