transmission filter?

We have a 99 CR-V that we recently purchased. It has just under 80K miles and it has always taken too long to shift between gears. The engine stays at high rpm's for a long time before shifting. The manual calls for the fluid to be changed at 90K, so we went ahead and had it done early. I wasn't aware of the "honda only" fluid directive from Honda at that time, so the shop I go to probably just used ordinary ATF. However, the shifting is much better now. It shifts much quicker than before. (Should save on gas). So I'm very pleased with that, but the mechanic told me there was no filter to change. Is this correct, there is no AFT filter on the 99 model?

Re: transmission filter?

I don't want to scare you here but my 98 shifted just like that before it blew up at 89K miles just before the 90K trans service. I was lucky I bought the 100K bumper to bumper warrenty with no deductable. didn't cost me a dime and I got a free rental car all I paid for was insurance for the rental. Not sure about the filter but alot of these cars have a steel mesh filter that is cleaned and reinstalled. I always use the Honda trans and rear diff fluids. In fact I just take it to Honda and have them do both at the same time.

Re: transmission filter?

My 98 awd auto crv does not have a filter.. I thought that it did for a while but when I swapped the engine I looked and discovered there is no such thing.

Re: transmission filter?

The Honda CR-V does not have a replaceable transmission filter. In fact, I've never heard of a Honda with a replaceable filter. The transmissions are designed to drain and fill. If anyone tells you otherwise, call the dealer.

Re: transmission filter?

The Honda trans only have a screen inside the trans that requires the entire trans to be dissasembled to get to it. Its not really a maintanance item that requires attention either.

However if the trans was replace at the dealer there may have been an external filter that was installed. All the reman trans come with a filter kit that is supposed to be installed when the new trans is put in. But to save time most tech's don't bother. Its easy to spot. It attaches to the cooler lines that run from the Trans to the radiator. Its a cylindrical piece.
