new here-how do i check for fault codes

97 pontiac grand am with my engine light on. how do i check for fault codes. is it on-off, on-off,on-off,on-off-on?

Welcome. Most auto parts stores like Autozone will hook it up to check the codes for you.

your 97' is odb-II,
which means you cant retrive the codes the way the odb-I and pre odb were.

Since you live in Canada, Autozones probly not an option.
I dont know whats available besides, everyones fav, Canadian tire
But you will need to get it scanned.
