Fuel Injection detailed info?

Hi, I was just wondering if there was a good site that I could check out to learn about fuel injected cars. I'm not trying to figure out any one specific model, I just want to learn everything I can about fuel injection systems, so that I can solve future problems faster, and more accuratly.

Re: Fuel Injection detailed info?

In a nutshell, you have sensors on the engine that report the position of the crank and the cam to the computer, as well as various other sensors all giving information about the timing. Using this info, the computer determines the precise time to open and close the injector for each cylinder, controlling how much fuel enters and when.

I am sure you wanted more detail than that... don't have a site to recommend... but maybe a good one to start at would be http://www.google.com

Everything you could posibly want is there!

Re: Fuel Injection detailed info?

Absolutely the best source, other than the internet, is a book called "Ford Fuel Injection and Engine Control" by Charles O. Probst, SAE. I bought a paperback copy for about $30 from Robert Bentley Publishers ( http://www.bentleypublishers.com/ ). You might also find it in a well stocked library, particularily a trade school that teaches auto repair. This guy helped develop Ford Fuel injection from the get-go. The copy I have covers all Fords 1988 to 1995. I originally used it for my 5.0 Mustang but have since used it for my Mazda pick-up and now my Escort. I bought a separate copy specific to my wifes '95 Corvette but the Ford book applies except for the pictures, to give you an idea.

Modern fuel injection is fairly easy to understand and all modern cars are based on the same principle first seen in 1966 when a cross licencing agreement between Bendix and Bosch resulted in VW offering it on their Type 3 air cooled engine. If you read this book, you will understand not only Ford, but every fuel injection system now built in the world. Although it deals with computer systems, it is written in a very down-to-earth language, since it was inspired and has been used by several American manufacturers to train dealer mechanics which are good, but not rocket scientists by any means. The engineer/author even has a sense of humor. One of the best books I ever bought.
