Breaking in transmission

I'm starting to break in the new transmission, I only filled it with 4 quarts of dexIII/mercon ATF. At first when I ran through the gears, it made a sucking noise like it was dry, then after a few minutes EACH GEAR vibrated slightly but did not kick in, especially reverse which usually does. What could be the problem?

did you put a new filter in the tranny you got in there now? make shure you have the TV cables adjusted right befor you go driving it,other wise you will fry the tranny.

Yes there's a new filter, I just did that today. Also, I connected the TV cable the way I took it apart, how do I adjust it?

Re: Breaking in transmission

TV adjustment (normally) is done by pushing the detent lock in and sliding the adjustment tab all the way in (back). Release the detent lock and manually open the throttle slowly and evenly to WOT. The tab will pull out and settle in where it should based on cable condition.

Now, in reality, unless it's a brand new cable assembly, that's not going to be the case, you'll need to adjust accordingly. Do the above and see how it shifts. If it's soft, manually push the detent back 1 notch and test drive again. If still soft continue 1 notch at a time ONLY.

The same applies to if it were shifting hard, just bring the detent out 1 notch at a time until it's accepatable.

However, I think fluid is the issue here. The torque converter alone eats quite a few guarts. And even if it was full (T/C) 4 quarts omly in the trans seems a litttle light, isn't it more like 6 or 7? Don't remember off the top of my head.

Re: Breaking in transmission

4 qts of fluid isn't going to be enough, especially if the trans and torque converter were both empty. A 700R4 holds a total of 10 qts of fluid.

Re: Breaking in transmission

That's what I was thinking, about 4 in T/C and 6 1/2 ish down the tube.

You need to fill it up with fluid before you burn it up.
If you have not already burnt up clutches.

Add about 5 more qts in dipstick tube and start checking the dip stick.
The TC wiil take care of itself.
If the transmission was dry they take 10-11-12 qts.

Re: Breaking in transmission

I'd stay away from running it thru the gears until it has around 7 to 8 qts. in it. Hey, at least you don't have a C6 or E4OD, they take about 13qts..

Forget an automatic C6, I hate automatics. I need a clutch and a shift knob on my best cars. I heard the 700R4 was strong though.

what would happen if I overfilled it? what would the tranny do?
