Steering and dash lights

I have a 2001 Silverado with the 5.3l, extended cab.

I have the steering clunk/rattle. Which is the shaft that needs to be replaced? The parts list shows an upper shaft, intermediate shaft and a lower shaft.

Has anyone else had problems with the lights that light up the heater switches? The lights for the switches on the bottom row (recirculate air vs fresh air and the rear window defroster) have gone out so that I can not see the switches at night. I took it apart and those bulbs are soldered into the PC board. The lights test OK. Before I spend a lot of time looking, has anyone else had this problem and what was the cause?
