Tranny messing up on 3.1 Beretta

I have a bad problem with my 1990 Beretta. It's the Indy Pace Car replica, and it'll fly...i've had it to about 145 on a 1/2 mile straight from 20. But that's not the problem. Me and my dad bought it for $300 and rebuilt it...new front end...replaced the ignition (everything right down to the coilpack). After we got it all put back together and got a new windshield for it..(wrecked 10 years ago, sat up and still started up no problem with old gas)....we took it to get inspected. On the way, there is a red light and when we came to stopping, this was WAY before i did the 145....it stalled out...i figured it was just some sludge working it's way out so we let it ride for about a week, my mom drove it back and forth to work...she had no problems....but when I took it to town one day, it stalled again....so i went to my favorite place...advance auto parts...and bought some lucas tranny treatment. put it in, and it still does it...I went all around the tranny looking for leaks, broken lines, i even rechanged the fluid at 300 miles....still does it...it's kinda making me upset cause I love this car and I have plans for it...can someone please help me?

TCC Solenoid...... It is prolly shot and needs to be changed. If it is shot, once the trans gets the signal to lock up the torque convertor it won't release it. Then it ends up stalling the car when you try to stop.

Running a 4T40 at whatever RPM it might take to propel a wrong-wheel-drive car to 145 MPH is going to be risking balooning the converter. The resultant distortion might bind the TCC enough to make application and release a little less smoooth than normal. Just something else to consider.

Re: Tranny messing up on 3.1 Beretta

I had a similar problem in my Beretta, it was the TCC solenoid as mentioned above. About a $200 fix at a shop, so it's not that big of a job, or you can simply unplug the mechanism, it won't hurt anything and will stop your stalling, if in fact the TCC is the issue. I would first unplug it to see if this is really your problem that way you don't take it to a shop and explain what's wrong and have them tell you that you need a new tranny or something. Also, by the way, your car does not go 145, the max speed of a Beretta with the 3.1 is about 130ish. And unless you took the rev limiter off of your car, you are topping out around 112mph. Sorry, I had to nip that in the bud.....

Re: Tranny messing up on 3.1 Beretta

I replaced the TCC solenoid in an 89 GT w/ 2.8. It really isn't that hard so I dunno why the shop charges so much. I would unplug it first and check it then look into replacing it yourself if it is the problem.

My 89GT does 130+ but it is a 5speed w/ 2.8. My 95 Z26 does 115 and is auto.
