ABS - Sensor

My ABS light has been on for a while. I did a brake job over the weekend and while I was under the car I decided to measure the resistance of each wheel sensor.

3 of the 4 were just under 2000 ohms. The LR was an open circuit. I removed the sensor and the case where the coil is located is damaged and cracked and obviously the cause of my discontinuity.

I am travelling the the US and I would like to know where a good place to purchase a replacement might be. Here (in Toronto) my options are limited to mail order or Ford. I haven't checked the price at Ford but on line it was going to run about $40 US including shipping from Fordparts.com.

It seems like parts are less expensive in the US. Are Pep Boys, or Autozones good choices? Does anyone know what the price for a sensor at Ford in the US is?

Does anyone know what the gap between the sensor and the toothed ring is? I would think that there is a spec somewhere. It certainly is not in my Haynes.

Thanks

Re: ABS - Sensor

I replaced the rear sensor on my 2000 about a year and a half ago. I recall that Autozone did not carry the sensors at that time, so I had to go to the local dealer and paid $41 +tax. I don't know which way you're coming into the States, but I'm in the Buffalo area. If you are coming this way, I could call around and get some prices for you. Let me know.

When I put the sensor on I recall spending some time cleaning up the mounting surface of rust and corrosion in order to make sure that the gap was met.

I just checked out a couple things: rockauto.com has motorcraft sensors for about $35 but shipping is about $7 or $8 (maybe more to Canada), Autozone does not carry them, Pep Boys- I don't care for, and Advance Auto has aftermarkets for closer to $50 before tax. So, believe it or not, the dealership might just be the best bet.

Re: ABS - Sensor

Hi Pitteach,

Go Sabres!

Perhaps these sensors are not as readily available as I thought. I tried Canadian tire, Napa-online and I couldn't find them on the Autozone site. Thanks but don't spend any time I will just price Ford Canada and and compare it to the US Price. The taxes are better south too. Thanks again for the offer.

I always go through Buffalo. Great city. Gotta stop for an order of wings!

Next time you come through let me know. There's a little place up the road from me with wings that will knock your socks off.

Thanks. My theory is that Ford up here will be $80 + 14% CDN.

Re: ABS - Sensor

drw I have never used Rock auto myself, but they will ship to canada....you should check the site out....http://www.rockauto.com/ After you factor in the shipping and exchange rate, may or may not be worth it...
By the way where are you in Canada?

Rockauto has them for $29.95 (I think) and 10 for shipping. About the same as Ford ($41.95). I am in Mississauga (west of Toronto).

I figure that by doing the labour myself I am able to address more issues from a financial point of view. I could not afford to pay someone to do all of the necessary repairs and maintenance.

This ABS issue has been shelved for about 18 months.

Re: ABS - Sensor

I priced the sensors at 2 Ford dealers. 45.78 + Tax Canadian from one dealer. This is in-line with the $41 US Pitteach got in Buffalo. Maybe even a bit better with the exchange.

Here is the kicker. Another Ford dealer quoted me $105 ish. (I stopped listening after I heard hundred). I am astonished that there could be this much of a difference between dealers and that they are allowed to move that much from whatever the list price is.

I did not comment to them at the time and I am going to try them one more time to ensure that there was no misunderstanding of the part I needed or the quantity. I will make some serious noise if this is in fact the price they are trying to get me to pay. Of course this is the same dealer that asked me for $7.25 for a litre of Mercon V where 10 feet away from the parts counter was a dsiplay with a sticker of $ 4.09.

On a different note:

Does anyone know if there is a quoted clearance between the sensor and the toothed ring? I asked the guy at the counter and he said no but the sensor clearly has a slot meaning it is intended to be adjusted into position.

Re: ABS - Sensor

Most Ford products are at about .038 inch. I would start there. I will try to remember to look at manual at shop tomorrow

Re: ABS - Sensor

DRW1000

When I cleaned my rear sensors and put them back in, I got it as close to the sensor ring without it touching. It seems to work this way.

Regards

Dan

Thanks all! I will check in when I get it working - sooner if I don't.

Re: ABS - Sensor

Looked in manual and all it tells is how to remove and replace the sensor and do the tests on sensors. There is no specifications for air gap. You may want to measure the other gaps and match the replacement with the others.
