to see if it has a security code, plug it into your 99 SL and find out. if so, you'll have to enter a code to get it to work. in which case you can call the dealership, give them the serial number on the radio, and they can give you the security code. if they won't help or say they'll charge you to look up the code, just hang up and call another dealership.
