transmission 92 crown victoria lx

my 92 crown victoria lx i think is having tansmission problems it will run but it wont go into 3rd gear and it has a winning sound if you go over 40 mph.
thought it may be a gear box that controls the transmission not sure can anyone help me out a bit maybe it has happend to you.

First check all the linkage to be sure it is going into the proper gear. Sounds like the transmission is hung in 2nd gear and that is causing the whine. If all the linkage is correct, it may be time for a rebuild.

if it has the aod trans check the plastic bushing at the throttle body where the tv cable connects to. even if it looks fine replace it. they are like 2$ at any ford dealer and worth the insurence.

What may be wrong, and both previous suggestions were good ones, has a LOT to do with which transmission you have in your '92.

Early '92s had the AOD, and those built after mid May of 1992 had the AODE. They are more different than similar.

First, replace the speed sensor on the differential. Sensor is located at the top of defferential. Sounds funny, but give it a try. If after replacing and problem still persist, change out the 3-4 solenoid on the trans valve body. Beyond that, change out the torque converter. Roger
