rebuilding transfer case...

i just had to pull my old transfer case out becasue the chain loosened and started popping inside. So i decided that i am going to rebuild this one. Now, the transer case is an Aisin transer case, what would be the best rebuild kit? Its a 1998 jeep cherokee limited with a new process 242 transfer case!

Im not sure its worth the cost to do a complete rebuild. I think I would just replace the chain. Heres some info to get you started though.

Rebuilding these cases is tricky. All the internal bearing races use loose needle bearings; so when you pull the gear shaft out approx 164 tiny needles bearings fall all over the floor.......and inevitably you only find 163 of them!!

You can remove the case and remove the rear case housing and expose the chain there. However, IMO its rare for these chains just to stretch like that unless its been driven in 4WD only for 50,000 miles. Possibly you may have other internal problems that go beyond the scope fo a normal rebuild.

Consider a professionally rebuilt unit on an exchange basis.
