Soft brakes after replacing front pads

Hi all -

I just replaced the front pads on my '01 GL2, and the pedal is VERY soft on my test drive - almost like there's a lot of air in the system. Brake fluid level is OK, and if you pump the brakes with the engine off it stiffens up after 2-3 pumps. With the engine on, the pedal will travel farther than usual - almost to the floor, but the Brake warning light doesn't come on. There's not a real solid feel to the braking, either; it almost feels like I couldn't lock them up if I wanted to (or needed to) which makes me nervous.

I've had my ABS/Trac/Service vehicle lights on for a while (I'm assuming a bad wheel bearing sensor, but can't afford to replace it yet). Could the deactivated ABS system be causing problems with the brake system? Do the brakes just need to be bled? - And if so, why (as I only changed the pads)? Any ideas?

I'd start by beeding the brakes first then tackle the ABS - hub/bearing problem.

Okay, silly question now - if I'm bleeding the brakes witha partner, do we do that with the engine running or not? Does it make a difference to have the power booster on?

You bleed the brakes with power off. Good luck!
