98 Beetle - Stalling Out

I own a 99 New Beetle.... The problem I am having is after driving for 30 Minutes it will just turn off and leave me stranded till it cools down.... I have tried the following Items....

1. Replaced Ignition Coil
2. Replaced Plugs and Wires...
3. Intake Manifold seems to get very hot...
4. Fans come on when I turn the Air Conditioner On...
5. Fans come on When Motor Heats up and Air Conditioner is Hot...
6. No Spark coming from Coil when it Shuts Down.....Just cranks over
7. Check Engine Light is on all the time

All I can think of is it is possibly Over-Heating and shutting down til it cools off.... But I do not get any coolent Light that comes on. Any help would be appreciated.... I feel like ..... Hopefully someone has encountered this Problem before..... you can either post a solution here for all us Bug owers to see or I can be E-Mailed at [email protected]....

Re: 98 Beetle - Stalling Out

G'day,
That sounds like a crank angle sensor (CAS) failing to me. They are very common fail items down here on Holden Commodores and others. There is a post above yours in the NB forum where the CAS was faulty as well. In Holdens, the CAS is visible and the standard test is to pour cold water on them to cool them down - then if the car starts then that proves it was the CAS. Not sure where it is on the NB but I know they have one.
Good Luck.

regards

Denis

Thanks Hako.... Thats what we finally figued it might be... It took awhile but I finally found it... It is located behind the Oil Filter... takes a 10mm socket to take it out... Ordered the part on Sunday for 64.99.... Will come in on Tueday and put it in.... will keep everyone posted if it solves the problem... Jeff

Re: 98 Beetle - Stalling Out

also if that doesnt fix it I would suggest replacing the coolant temperature sensor. Its a common failure on vw's. 98/99 has the old style square 4 pin and its blue. The new style 99+ has a green oval shaped 4 pin. (old style of the green one is black in color) both are located on the coolant flange on the driver side of the cylinder head in the coolant flange. Also replace the o-ring and use vw coolant only (no green stuff here )
