2002 Maxima vs Dodge Daytona

My first 'kill' in the new car, I guess.

Polygon: I think this was a V6 Daytona, because it didn't accelerate like my old best buddy's Shelby Z, and it hopped off the line well enough to surmise that it wasn't the base non-turbo 4 propelling it. I didn't see any badges present to indicate what engine it might have had, otherwise.

Anyhow.

I was driving home from a friend's shop, and on one of these stretches on the way home, there's an area where you basically have long straightaways between lights, which are about half a mile away apart. (Not incriminating myself by saying which road this was on, though there are a lot of these types of roads on the outskirts of AZ.)

I notice that this white Daytona next to me seems to be taking off from each light semi fast. So at the next light, I kinda paced him off the line, and stayed next to him after.

He kept accelerating, where I stopped at about 60mph (45 zone). At the next light, he jumps again, where I was babying my car off the line. He had a car on me when I decided to bury the pedal in 2nd. In seconds, I was next to him, and about 3 cars ahead of him soon after that, where I slowed down.

At the next light, I really wasn't going to go, which I didn't. I take off normal, but then as I do this, I hear a squeal to my left, and the Daytona takes off, putting about 2 cars between us.

"Ah, fuck it." I decided.

I step on it in 2nd (1st is over VERY quickly with the close-ratio 6-speed), and again, in mere seconds, I am passing him, and this time, I kept it buried all the way to the top of third, which had me about 6 cars ahead of the Daytona.

He still kept accelerating briskly after that, but I decided it was time to stop wasting gas, so I went back to normal driving.

As a side note, my car is pretty throaty even in the middle RPM range. Think 350Z with an exhaust, which is not a stretch, considering my car has basically the same motor. I guess this sound attracted some 2002-2004 Civic 4 door that was lowered with rims, and a fartcan. It's just a side note, because it really wasn't a race. Think tiny dots in the rearview. This happened earlier in the same drive.

Good kill. I'm assuming you have the 3.5 liter motor. If so, i'm not at all surprised by the kill. Those Maxima's haul a$$. I'm sure you'll be really happy with it. Hopefully you have it for a long time.

P.S. try to race a new Camry V6 when you have a chance.

Re: 2002 Maxima vs Dodge Daytona

yeah, the new 268hp camry should be a interesting race since with the old rating system they were making 280hp. i don't know why nissan didn't adapt to the new style of rating. i'm really curious of how much power they lose. the biggest losers are toyotas though. their 220hp engine ended up making only 190-197hp after the revised rating.

The Max has similar power from the same engine, same 6-speed transmission, lighter (Max = 3224lbs / Alty SE-R = 3316lbs), and MILES cheaper.

Max > SE-R
SCC said the SE-R was crap anyways. They say the handling is way off on it.

maxima's with the vq35de own. have u seen what that engine alone does to a sentra? lets just say 12 sec runs on slicks. i want carrnutt to grab i/h/e and really feel what its like in the maxima. then will he love it for what it was ment to be used for.

I already have the 'i' and 'e' part of that covered. If only the 'h' part wasn't almost $900.00 'cheap'.

Also, I thought the car was 'meant' to be a semi-luxury family sedan?

Nice race man, and it wouldn't have mattered anyways. Even if he had a Turbo II or a Turbo IV you would have roasted him. Only the Turbo III Iroc Daytona would have had a chance, but you would have known it was one of those.
