Need Some Insight (electrical/Fuel Problem)

I have a 1991 Stealth ES. I was driving it the other day, when the engine sputtered to a stop, and wouldn't restart. It now cranks, and would occasionally stutter, but wont start. ive tested the injectors, and there was no injector pulse, and i have no spark. i have also replaced the crank angle sensor, but its the same. Is my ecu shot? or is there another sensor that could cause this? any help is very appreciated!

Re: Need Some Insight (electrical/Fuel Problem)

Are you getting a Check Engine light?

If yes, start by pulling the code(s):

Re: Need Some Insight (electrical/Fuel Problem)

Ok, just so we are clear
A) you are getting a check engine light correct?
B) you tried pulling the codes via the method I linked to, above? (double check you are using the correct connections )
C) you have tried new batteries in your Multimeter, and are sure it isn't the problem.

If the answer to all 3 of these is yes, and you are sure you are doing it properly, then it is time to pull your ECU and look for corrosion from leaking capacitators.

ECU removal/inspection

Re: Need Some Insight (electrical/Fuel Problem)

Pull the ECU and check for leaking caps, it takes about 15 minutes. Directions are in the link in my last post.

Re: Need Some Insight (electrical/Fuel Problem)

well, i pulled it. it doesnt look -that- damaged. two of the capacitors are fine, and one is leaking slightly... can that really kill the whole thing?

Re: Need Some Insight (electrical/Fuel Problem)

Yep.

www.avpro.com

Check out the FAQ, there is a thread on leaky caps/avpro but the basic jist is it'll cost you about $260 to get it sent there, cleaned, serviced, caps replaced, etc, and sent back to you with a lifetime warranty.

Your other option is to try and find another used ECU for under that cost, then buy new caps yourself for about $5, and pay somebody another $40 or so to replace them, before they go bad and damage the board.

why buy another ECU? why not just send his ECU to someone (ppl on threeSi) and have the caps replaced for about 40 bucks?

Re: Need Some Insight (electrical/Fuel Problem)

Because if one has already been leaking, the board is damaged. Simply replacing hte caps wont work now...it's too late. You need to either get the board fixed, or replace it. And as far as I know, very few people on 3si will actually fix it, and the few that do, will charge more than $40.

ahh, i wasn't aware that once they start leaking, the board is damaged.

but i recall a thread that mentioned all the references for repairing ECU, who would do it, and their price. i'll try to find it. but i DO know that a few would do it for around 50.

Re: Need Some Insight (electrical/Fuel Problem)

ya, here's the thread http://www.3si.org/forum/showthread....light=ecu+caps

one guy will replace the caps for $25, but in some cases that hasn't solved ppl's ECU problems. so it may be as you said, that once the caps start leaking, more damage is done, and simply replacin the caps won't repair all that is needed.
