Lower timing belt cover

I know many members here have the 6 bolt swap into a 2g. Here is the problem I'm running into on my friends GSX... We have to cut the timing belt cover for the motor mount to fit through it properly and such. When we cut it though, it seems as though the top portion becomes flimsy and can flex a good bit. We are worried about the flimsy part rubbing on the timing belt and causing problems later down the road here. How have you guys cut your timing belt covers so that they don't flex into the timing belt?

We thought about making a metal lip around the whole top edge and riviting it to it to strengthen it... Anybody have better ideas or things they have done to solve this problem?

Re: Lower timing belt cover

I would just by a new one and avoid the hassle.

Jimmy rigs are dangerous in that area of the car. Something could grab the belt and then you'll be putting in some BIG bucks for repairs.

Right, but you don't understand. You have to use a 6 bolt timing belt when installing it into a 2g. No question about that. But, the motor mount hits the cover in a different spot than where it would hit it in a 1g. Thus it HAS to be trimmed to fit in the car unless you wanna run with no lower timing belt cover at all. We ended up cutting as little as possible on it but its still not the greatest I don't think... Trust me though, I know how important the cover is... lol

Re: Lower timing belt cover

How about using a 1g cover? Will that work?

That is what we're using... You can't use the 2g cover cause it will hit the water pump in a different spot and theres no possible way to get it on. And you can't use the 1g cover cause of the motor mount hole being slightly lower... So we hacked on the 1g cover a little bit and it turned out pretty well I think... I might try modifying a 2g cover to see if I can get it around the water pump instead... Too bad I just can't make my own timing belt cover. Man that would be sweet. Think there could be some good money in that if I actually made a nice aluminum one that fit perfect for a 6 bolt swap in a 2g? lol

Re: Lower timing belt cover

There's gotta be something that works, of all the 6-bolt swaps I've heard of, this is the first timing belt cover issue I've heard of.

Nope, everybody that does the swap has this problem... But, they usually just hack off the upper portion of it to fit around the motor mount and they don't give it any second thoughts. I would of course like to run the full cover when it comes time to put mine back on. I need to come up with something awesome so I can sell the idea and become a millionaire.
