1984 4000S starving for gas

I bought a 1984 4000S and drove fine the first day...next day it will not run. It would start, but I would have to floor the gas pedal to keep it going and then it would just die. I contacted the fellow I bought it from. Not to gripe...just to ask for advice. I have never had to work on an Audi before.

He told me that I should try to replace the fuel filter and then the fuel pump relay. I replaced the fuel filter and there was no change in performance. I then changed out the fuel pump relay and there was a small improvement in that it would idle, although it was very rough...still starving for fuel. I let it idle for a while and then took it for a spin. It ran rough for about a mile and then it was normal. YEAH, yippy, my troubles are over...not quite. Now every day I drive it I have to let it warm up for a few minutes and then it idles rough and when I take off it sputters for a half a block or so and then it is normal.

Is this normal for these veichles?
